Research Project Highlights CO₂ Emissions Impact in the Durrës–Porto Romano Port Complex

The Port Authority of Durrës hosted the final meeting of the research project “CO₂ Emissions from Port Operators and Their Impact on the Durrës–Porto Romano Port Complex.” The project was carried out in collaboration with Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës and supported by the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation (NASRI). The initiative began in January 2023 and aimed to assess the environmental footprint of port operations in the area.

The study examined how activities carried out by port operators influence local CO₂ concentration levels within the port complex. The findings highlight the measurable impact of port-related operations and underline the importance of implementing targeted measures to reduce emissions.

Researchers emphasize that reducing CO₂ emissions requires the modernization of port technologies, improved operational efficiency, and the adoption of sustainable practices in port activities. Such measures are essential to mitigating environmental impact while maintaining the efficiency and competitiveness of port services.

This research represents an important step toward the development of greener and more sustainable ports in Albania. It also aligns with broader international efforts to decarbonize the maritime sector.

The project is closely connected with initiatives promoting maritime decarbonization, including the ZeroC project, which focuses on advancing zero-emission solutions and supporting the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable maritime transport.

Through collaborative research and innovation, the Port Authority of Durrës continues to support efforts aimed at reducing environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future for maritime transport and port operations.
